Reader’s Question:

What does sr22 covers? My wife has never had a license in the state of Alaska. When she was given a moving citation for not having car insurance on the car that she was driving, they suspended her non-existing license.

Jimmy

Anchorage, AK

An sr22 financial responsibility certificate is a form which must be filed by the insurance carrier stating that car liability (bodily injury liability and property damage liability) insurance is in effect for a particular person. It is required when insurance is provided to a person who was in an accident or was convicted of a traffic violation and was unable to show proof financial responsibility. So, if your wife still resides in Alaska, he will need to take out a sr22 insurance policy. And, to keep that insurance policy “in effect,” she will be required to obtain her Alaska driver’s license. Now, if she lives outside of Alaska, she will need to find an insurance carrier that will write a “Alaska sr22. Most insurance carriers will not write an out-of-state sr22. Because of this, she may have to take out a policy through an insurance carrier run by the state in which she is residing.

Reader’s Question:

I am planning to buy an SUV this year but my wife disagrees with me since apparently, auto insurance premium rates for SUV’s cost a fortune. How correct is my wife with this information on auto insurance she got here from Anchorage, Alaska?

Basty

Anchorage, AK

Insurance carriers consider the possibility that a particular brand of car will be vandalized, stolen, or involved in a crash insurers use different rating systems and to determine their car symbol.

Plus, insurance carriers look at industry wide statistics and also their own experience with car insurance claim payouts to determine the car insurance rates. Each of these rating factors go into deriving a statistical auto insurance rate.

Typically SUV are not in the top 10 list of most stolen cars so that factor is not as big. The simplest auto insurance factor to look at is size and the cost. A car that costs more to repair after a crash or can cause more damage when they have impact will be a higher risk than less expensive and smaller cars.

Generally the cost to insure an SUV is 15% more than the average vehicle because of the greater cost for repairs in a property damage liability insurance claim or medical damages. Other factor that most people do not know is that SUVs do not have to meet the federal government’s standards set for bumpers on vehicles relative to commuter traffic or parking lots so, even though they are bigger they really are not safer.

So basically yes a larger SUV will cost more to insure than smaller cars. Those with safety features though will be cheaper to insure.

Reader’s Question:

My daughter just got into an accident in Anchorage, Alaska with two other vehicles and totaled her car and it was her fault. As it turns out her insurance had cancelled on her before the accident. Will she have to pay out of pocket for the damages to the other cars or will the insurance on the other two vehicles cover it?

Jane

Anchorage, AK

There are 2 types of uninsured motorist coverages, one is for bodily injury and the other one is for property damage coverage. The other vehicle owner would need to have the property damage coverage to claim the damages on their cars with uninsured motorist. If the motorists do not have this coverage they might have collision coverage which they could make their vehicle damage claims under.

Even if the other car owners have insurance to cover their damages they might decide to come after your uninsured daughter to reimburse them for their deductible or damages. If the motorists do not have coverages that will take care of their own property damage then most states including Alaska would allow them to take your daughter, the at-fault party, to court to try and get a judgment against her that would pay them for their damages.

Car Insurance Rate Alaska AK

Reader’s Question:

I want to get car insurance, but last year I received a speeding ticket in which wasn’t my fault by the way so I have a court date to fight it next two weeks. If I wanted to to get car insurance now, would that ticket affect my car insurance rate, or would it only take affect if I was found guilty for the citation?

Parker

Anchorage, AK

Convictions of traffic violations, such as speeding, affect your insurance rates since the infraction is placed on your motor vehicle record (MVR) so before you go to court for the citation it should not affect you getting insurance or auto insurance rates.

If you are obtaining an auto insurance before your court date then this speeding citation should not affect your premiums at this time since you have not been convicted of the infraction. If you wait to obtain insurance after your court date and you are found guilty then on your car insurance application you would have to list this speeding infraction and the insurance company would see it on your driving record. It then would depend upon the insurance carrier’s rating system if this speeding violation would affect your premium.

Reader’s Question:

I was convicted for failure to submit to a breath analyzer test in Alaska and I have a NM driver’s license. Since New Mexico is a non-SR-22 requiring state, do I still have to have the SR-22 form for the state of Alaska, since the renewed drivers license will be in New Mexico?

James

Anchorage, Alaska (AK)

New Mexico and Alaska are both members of the Driver’s License Compact so the information regarding your failure to submit for the breath analyzer (BAC) test should be reported back to New Mexico, your home state. Along with the Alaska infraction information, the Alaska courts or Department of Motor Vehicle will probably also submit to the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division what they are requiring of you, including the SR-22.

If New Mexico does not require SR-22s for different violations then you may need to speak with Alaska what other New Mexico insurance they may allow instead of the SR-22 in order to comply with their requirements on you.

As for your NM driver’s license renewal, you will need to verify with the NM MVD to check if you can renew your license without complying with the penalties placed on you by AK, such as the SR-22. It might be that if your license is currently suspended in Alaska, that New Mexico will require you to straighten those issues before renewing your license.

Reader’s Question:

Hi, I want to know what the minimum Bodily Injury Liability coverage in Alaska?

Kate

Anchorage, AK

The state of Alaska follows a Tort system. This means that someone must be found to be at fault for causing the accident, and that individual and their insurance provider is responsible for all the damages.

The state of Alaska requires minimum Bodily Injury Liability coverage of $50,000 per injured person up to a total of $100,000 per accident, and Property Damage Liability coverage with a minimum limit of $25,000. This basic coverage is usually referred to as 50/100/25 coverage.

In addition to that, you can obtain Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage for any bodily injury caused by an uninsured motorist. While Alaska state law does not require this coverage, you can buy this as an optional coverage for added protection.

Q: I recently started filing my Anchorage SR22 insurance policy. Is there anything I can do in my free time to make myself appear less risky?

A: You hit the nail on the head for what you need to do with your Anchorage SR22. Risk is what’s making you pay so much for your car insurance coverage, and nothing else, so the key for people who don’t want to pay is to ease up on the risk. Several ways exist for you to prove your responsibility with little to no effort.

One way is for you to sign up for a defensive driving class. Call your Anchorage SR22 car insurance company first to find out a list of classes which count, because not all will and you don’t want to waste your time. A defensive driving class is an excellent way to lower your risk, especially if you have Anchorage SR22, because not only do you get a car insurance discount, but you also learn a few things which help you in the future.

Now, you can only use a defensive driving class to save you money if you aren’t obligated to take it. If taking a defensive driving class is part of your required DUI recovery track from the judge, then unfortunately this isn’t an option for you.

Cheapest SR22

Q: How can I get the cheapestsr22 on a new car?

A: Whether or not you are able to get the cheapestsr22 on a new car will, of course, depend on what kind of car you buy. Put your car choices into a insurance quote form before you make your decision, so that you can see what kinds of prices you can expect. In any case, even if you decide to go with a pricier car, you won’t be surprised.

Some aspects of a car will help you get cheapestsr22, so you can consider those when looking for your quotes. Most of all, a car needs to be safe. Safety involves many factors, but essentially a safe car needs to have plenty of safety features, such as air bags and anti lock brakes, and it also needs to be crash worthy, which means that the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration has passed it on all of its crash tests. In addition to all of this, it needs to have a decent claims record with your car insurance company, and this you can only find out by getting a quote.

Remember that when determining the safety of a car, it doesn’t only count that it’s safe for you. Car insurance companies will consider both liability and comprehensive prices. A mid sized car is safer both for you and the cars around you.

Sr-22 insurance quotes

Q: If I’m ineligible for discounts, how do I get good Sr-22 insurance quotes?

A: Well, for one, I doubt you’re completely ineligible for all car insurance discounts. Some apply to everybody no matter what, although you may have to make some changes to get them. Just ask your car insurance company.

Of course, your company could just have very few ways to save money on your Sr-22 insurance quotes, which brings me to the best and easiest way to do this: buy your car insurance from the right company. Seems pretty obvious, right? Apparently not, since most people in this country are overpaying for their car insurance by hundreds of dollars. You know why they’re overpaying? Because they do things like stay with the same company for years and go with the first car insurance quote that comes along.

If you want reasonable Sr-22 insurance quotes, then you need to shop around. Get several car insurance quotes and compare the companes on their merits.Keep your own car insurance company in check and make sure you check new quotes every now and then.

Q: I have a Juneau Alaska SR22 and want to buy a new car. Will my SR22 disqualify me?

A: Your possession of a Juneau Alaska SR22 insurance policy will not affect your buying a car in any way. However, just as when you buy any car, you will have to make sure your insurance policy is up to date when you go to buy it and that you have added the new car with the proper coverage in thirty days.

Car dealers don’t care how often you crash your cars. You could have wrecked ten cars in the past few years and they wouldn’t even blink an eye, so long as you have gap, comprehensive, and collision coverage on your Juneau Alaska SR22 policy.
