Comprehensive Insurance Juneau Alaska AK
Reader’s Question:
Is it possible to obtain separate auto insurance for the contents of my vehicle in Juneau, Alaska? I had my speakers and stereo stolen but couldn’t afford the excess fees.
Bill
Juneau, Alaska (AK)
In Juneau, Alaska, personal belongings stolen from a car are usually not covered by car insurance but instead by a person’s renters or homeowners insurance.
If you have a comprehensive car insurance coverage but the excess fee is too expensive, you might speak reducing the fee with your insurance provider. This likely will make the cost of your car insurance rate to rise but permit you to have an excess (deductible) that you could pay more easily than your current one.
If you unable to reduce the excess fee, you might check into a personal contents or belongings policy. Typically, contents policy seems to be for household items but it might be possible to find one that covers automobiles.

SR22 Auto Insurance Alaska AK
Reader’s Question:
What does sr22 covers? My wife has never had a license in the state of Alaska. When she was given a moving citation for not having car insurance on the car that she was driving, they suspended her non-existing license.
Jimmy
Anchorage, AK
An sr22 financial responsibility certificate is a form which must be filed by the insurance carrier stating that car liability (bodily injury liability and property damage liability) insurance is in effect for a particular person. It is required when insurance is provided to a person who was in an accident or was convicted of a traffic violation and was unable to show proof financial responsibility. So, if your wife still resides in Alaska, he will need to take out a sr22 insurance policy. And, to keep that insurance policy “in effect,” she will be required to obtain her Alaska driver’s license. Now, if she lives outside of Alaska, she will need to find an insurance carrier that will write a “Alaska sr22. Most insurance carriers will not write an out-of-state sr22. Because of this, she may have to take out a policy through an insurance carrier run by the state in which she is residing.

Reader’s Question:
My daughter just got into an accident in Anchorage, Alaska with two other vehicles and totaled her car and it was her fault. As it turns out her insurance had cancelled on her before the accident. Will she have to pay out of pocket for the damages to the other cars or will the insurance on the other two vehicles cover it?
Jane
Anchorage, AK
There are 2 types of uninsured motorist coverages, one is for bodily injury and the other one is for property damage coverage. The other vehicle owner would need to have the property damage coverage to claim the damages on their cars with uninsured motorist. If the motorists do not have this coverage they might have collision coverage which they could make their vehicle damage claims under.
Even if the other car owners have insurance to cover their damages they might decide to come after your uninsured daughter to reimburse them for their deductible or damages. If the motorists do not have coverages that will take care of their own property damage then most states including Alaska would allow them to take your daughter, the at-fault party, to court to try and get a judgment against her that would pay them for their damages.

Alaska AK SR22 Car Insurance
Reader’s Question:
My husband had a record of DWI in Alaska and he got an SR-22 with Geico. He was told by his employer that he still cannot drive a company vehicle because their insurance (State Farm) will not allow it. Why?
Mary
Anchorage, AK
As you may be aware of, DWI in Alaska is serious offense. DWI offenders face both administrative license action and criminal prosecution once arrested for drunk driving. The AK Division of Motor Vehicles will disqualify your husband’s privilege to drive a commercial vehicle for a minimum period of years as required by law. The disqualification period can be one year or for life, depending on the degree of the DWI offense.
As for your husband’s restriction to be enrolled to his employer’s insurance policy, I would suggest speaking with the State Farm’s representative regarding his employer’s insurance policy covering the company vehicles. He can then further ask the insurance company why he is not on the policy and if there is a way he could be added.
Due to your husband’s DWI, State Farm’s underwriters may find your husband too much of a risk to be added to the commercial or business policy. Or, it may be that the cost of having your husband included to the policy would be much too high so his employer has opted to not have him on the policy.
If your husband is unable to get the answers he needs neither from his employer nor State Farm, he can contact the Alaska Division of Insurance to know for sure what is allowable according to your state laws.
Cheap Alaska Auto Insurance Rate
Readers Questions:
I am a businessman; I have five cars and every year I have a burden with my auto insurance rates in Alaska. Is there anybody who can help me find a way to avail a cheap auto insurance rate?
Danny
Anchorage, AK
Hello, Danny.
Your question is preferably easy but you must follow the guidelines to avail of cheap auto insurance.
Danny, please take note of this: I do not know how you do it in finding for a cheap auto insurance in Alaska but I hope this is the end of your burden of paying an expensive insurance where you can have a cheap auto insurance.
First, lower the insuring company’s risk. Using seatbelts, not smoking, and having alarm systems can mean cheap auto insurance coverage.
Secondly, ask your agent about any discounts to have cheap auto insurance. Saving money on sports autos works much the same way as saving money on any form of auto coverage. Just be a good driver and keep a clean record.
Next, for teenage drivers – who also fall into the category of what coverage companies call “new drivers” – tend to pay the highest auto coverage rate of all. Most teens are inexperienced drivers with no lengthy record of safe driving.
Mind to take precautions to theft proof your auto. Autos equipped with anti-lock brakes, air bags and automatic seatbelts are also eligible for discounts.
Lastly, get rebates. Some states set aside for rebates. California law allows agents issue as rebates a part of their commission to you.
Car Insurance Rate Alaska AK
Reader’s Question:
I want to get car insurance, but last year I received a speeding ticket in which wasn’t my fault by the way so I have a court date to fight it next two weeks. If I wanted to to get car insurance now, would that ticket affect my car insurance rate, or would it only take affect if I was found guilty for the citation?
Parker
Anchorage, AK
Convictions of traffic violations, such as speeding, affect your insurance rates since the infraction is placed on your motor vehicle record (MVR) so before you go to court for the citation it should not affect you getting insurance or auto insurance rates.
If you are obtaining an auto insurance before your court date then this speeding citation should not affect your premiums at this time since you have not been convicted of the infraction. If you wait to obtain insurance after your court date and you are found guilty then on your car insurance application you would have to list this speeding infraction and the insurance company would see it on your driving record. It then would depend upon the insurance carrier’s rating system if this speeding violation would affect your premium.

Reader’s Question:
I was convicted for failure to submit to a breath analyzer test in Alaska and I have a NM driver’s license. Since New Mexico is a non-SR-22 requiring state, do I still have to have the SR-22 form for the state of Alaska, since the renewed drivers license will be in New Mexico?
James
Anchorage, Alaska (AK)
New Mexico and Alaska are both members of the Driver’s License Compact so the information regarding your failure to submit for the breath analyzer (BAC) test should be reported back to New Mexico, your home state. Along with the Alaska infraction information, the Alaska courts or Department of Motor Vehicle will probably also submit to the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division what they are requiring of you, including the SR-22.
If New Mexico does not require SR-22s for different violations then you may need to speak with Alaska what other New Mexico insurance they may allow instead of the SR-22 in order to comply with their requirements on you.
As for your NM driver’s license renewal, you will need to verify with the NM MVD to check if you can renew your license without complying with the penalties placed on you by AK, such as the SR-22. It might be that if your license is currently suspended in Alaska, that New Mexico will require you to straighten those issues before renewing your license.

Reader’s Question:
I live in Anchorage, Alaska. Am I required in the state of AK (Alaska) to carry an SR-22 after getting a reckless driving ticket (10 points)?
Betty
Anchorage, AK
An SR-22 financial responsibility certificate is not required after you get a reckless driving ticket however it will be if you are convicted of this major traffic violation then your Alaskan driver’s license is revoked.
The AK driver manual states that reckless driving is defined as a willful disregard for the safety of persons or property. Conviction of reckless driving in Alaska will result in a license suspension or revocation. You will need to check from the court listed on your citation or the AK Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) how long the revocation of your driver’s license will last.
I would suggest that you contact the AK DMV since credits may be earned for violation-free driving and/or completion of a driver improvement course. The AK DMV can provide you more information on what traffic school courses are approved and could be used to receive these credits.
Cheapest SR22 insurance
Q: How can I get the cheapest SR22 insurance on my car? It’s kind of oldish.
A: If you want the cheapest SR22 insurance on your old car, then you need to figure out what its worth is and what you’re willing to pay for it. One of the most efficient ways for you to save money on your car insurance coverage is to get rid of as much coverage as possible. Cutting half your coverage, you cut half of your price.
Now, the levels of required liability insurance in Alaska are high, and to get the cheapest SR22 insurance, you will have fewer options concerning what coverages to drop. Still, the first thing you need to do is find out how much your car is worth. Look it up in Kelley’s Blue Book. If your car is worth less than $2000, then cut any coverage you have on it other than the minimum liability car insurance.
Since you have an SR22 on file, your insurance is more expensive, so you may want to set the bar a little lower. Ultimately, you don’t want to pay more on your car insurance premium than on your car, and you need to think about whether or not you can afford to replace your car if wrecked.
